Canceled vs. Cancelled

Once and for all, everyone, in American English, is the correct spelling "cancelled" or "canceled," or does it make any difference?

  1. cancelled

  2. canceled

  3. Both are equally correct.

The correct answer, for American English, is "canceled," although "cancelled" is also acceptable as a variant. In British English, it's "cancelling" and "cancelled"; in American English, it's "canceling" and "canceled." The confusion about "canceled" and "cancelled" in American English likely arises from the noun form, "cancellation," which has a "ll" spelling in both American and British English, and the fact that many U.S. organizations, such as airports, don't appear to understand what the most correct spelling is and routinely use "cancelled."
