The Name of That Green Guy

We love to rely on well-known characters for Halloween communications, but sometimes writing their names is not as straightforward as it seems. Test your knowledge on one of these characters.

What's the correct way to write the name of the character portrayed with green skin, stitches on his face, and bolts on his neck?

  1.  Frankenstein.

  2. Frankenstein's monster.

  3. Both are correct.

This one's a little tricky, but the correct answer is "Both are correct." Yes, in the book, Frankenstein is the doctor, so his creation is properly "Frankenstein's monster." However, through ubiquitous usage (or misusage), "Frankenstein" has come to refer to the monster itself and has become so standard that it's no longer considered an error.

For more on this, see the discussion titled “'Frankenstein' and 'Frankenfood': Creator or creation?” under the definition for "Frankenstein" in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
